Coat and Care Items for your Equine

For some of you trying to figure out what I am using on you may be a bit difficult. So as promised, I have made you a page to show you the items I use on you :)

Four Ring Curry
4ringcurry.jpg

This is a curry comb used on the horses coat. Some love it as it cuts the long hair off and pulls out the clumps of dirt and burrs quickly in winter.

I have always found it a bit to small and takes more time to use it than the shedder.

Bot Knife
boteggknife.jpg

Bots look like little tiny yellow splats of paint on your horses hairs. They will be located near the legs or under belly. A good shedder will normally take them off but here is the egg bot knife to see.

they can be cut with clippers or with normal scissors.

Electric Clippers
clippers.jpg

As small as this looks it is hard to believe a horse would hate it so much. This is the electric clippers that make your Equine go from shappy chic to just plain chic.

Horses seem to react to them about like they would a bumble bee. Therefor you should work you way up to the ears and muzzle by starting at the shoulder and let them feel the sound and buzz before you get to the head or feet.

Hoof Grease or Dressing
Hoofdressing.jpg

If you horses hooves look a bit dry or you know your going to have him in a wet area for long you may want to put on a good coat of grease.

My daddy taught me how to make our own. This is one of the brands I have seen a lot of people use.

Also nice to add just a tad to shine up any set of hooves just before the ring so hoooves shine up nicely.

Hoof Pick
Hoofpick.jpg

If you got a horse you gotta have a hoof pick. In dry weather or sandy ground covers there is a good chance the horse will not pick stuff up.

However, they will pick up stones, mud, debris, and small crawley things. Some reccomend picking the horses hooves before and after you work him. My family normally did all our grooming BEFORE the horse was ridden. I have found a lot of people ride first then groom.

Hoof / Frog Knife
hoofknife.jpg

This is the little knife that makes every horses life easier.

This is used to cut away the hoof up to the frog so that you have a dome shaped hoof wall. It is also used to trim the frog and remove pieces that may have become gashed.

Hoof Nippers
hoofnippers.jpg

These are Nippers. They are used to trim a horses foot or to remove a horse shoe. They are so strong they can cut the heads off of a nail to make the shoe come more easily.

Massager Brush
massagerbrush.jpg

Here is a little massager brush type item that is really just for those who want to give thier pony a little extra something while they hose the pony off.

As you dont shampoo a real horse but pony girls who are interested in a nice soapy body bath.... this looks awesome.

I have to admit to never having used one.

Rubber Curry Comb
rubbercurry.jpg

This is the rubber curry often seen used with grooms to curry up the dirt in the coat while hosing a horse down with water.

You don't shampoo a real horses coat. You just spray and massage the dirt and sweat out. People normally only give a shampoo bath to a horse if they are going to show in a day or two so they will have time for the natural oils to come back out.

Scraper
Scraper.jpg

This is the scraper I have been trying to discribe to you as the metal tube thing that looks as if it was cut in half lengthwize and then sanded down.

Shedder Scraper
Shedder.jpg

This shedder scraper thing here is my favorite item to use. It has a binding that holds the two handles together. Yet, you can pull the loose handle free and have a very nice Scrapper to pull off water or flip it over and cut the loose winter hair off quickly.

I have seen horses practically moan in pleasure with this item in late spring as the long winter hair itches.

Small Rasp
smallrasp.jpg

A wrasp is used so many ways on the farm that the barn will often have several sizes.

They are used to smooth a hoof wall after you have cut it out with your hoof knife as well as Planing a horses teeth.

Stiff Bristle Brush
stiffbristlebrush.jpg

A lot of people go out and buy these soft sweet looking brushes for horses coats and then they get them home and realize a horses coat is pretty thick and this is no more than a great buffer after you use the real thing....

This stiff bristle brush is the real deal. Next to the shedder / scraper this is my favorite brush and can be used on manes and tails in a pinch.

You really do need a tail brush but any hair brush that is sturdy will work well and you will find that tail brushes look a lot like hair brushes...

Lead Line with Stud Chain
Leadwithstudchain.jpg

This is the stud chain I have spoken of. It differes from a normal lead in that it has about a foot to 16 inches of heavy weight chain on the end of a nice leather lead.

I have seen people use this over a horses nose but can tell you from experiance if you loop it under the chin thru the lower rings in the halter definately gets the horses attention. As with most items that inflict pain the person using it needs to know when it is too much and how to alter its use.

Stud Chain thru Halter on Horse
Studchainonhorse.jpg

Here is a picture of a horse wearing a stud chain and the person who attatched it ran the chain on up to the upper ring as well.

I personally do not do that as the loose chain can dangle loosly between halter rings and give more room to warn the horse he is about to be jerked to let him give you his attention before you actually hurt him.

Some people now even require it in show rings on mares. Which to me is silly but they do think it looks good and masterful I suppose.... or maybe they are afraid of thier horse ummmmmmmm.

Mane Comb
manecomb.jjpg.jpg

A horses mane usually can tell you what type of training it is used for. Knotted horses are normally for steeplechase and huntseat.

The mane come keeps a quarter horse mane thin and allows easy plucking of hair to make sure it is easy to do up and manage.

Blue Spray
woundringwormmed.jpg

We called it blue spray. We sprayed it on wounds that might be infected or on ringworms ... yes horses and dogs get and give ringworm.

But never confuse this blue medicine with the purple medicine. That is Gentian violet use to cure thrush and many other antifungals.

Wound Dust
wounddust.jpg

This is the yellow powder medicine. IT is not wet and you put some into your hand and cup it over the wound to disenfect as well as clot the bleeding.

A swift kick on the leg from one horse to another and you will be glad you have this in your tack pack.

Nose / Tongue Twitch
Twitchs.jpg

When you are trying to get a horse to be still to either examine them or to ssy put shoes on one, even cleaning them out. You may need a way to keep thier attention up front and ways from what the human behind is doing. For this we use twitches.

Applying Twitches to a Horse
applyingtwitches.jpg

Ok so this was like the worst pic to show what a twitcher really does, but you slip the looped end over the INTIRE muzzle of the horse only using part of thier nostrils. Then you tighten it up usuallly with strings or a chain at the end.

One man can use them but daddy always made me squeeze them hard as a person can apply more pressure and let it vary. Pain applied constantly eventually reaches a threshold and is no longer felt.

Here is a picture of a man applying a different style of twitch.
